Hello Motherhood

A newborn baby lying on a blanket with a wrapper behind her, symbolizing the beginning of a new journey into motherhood.
My little munchkin. I just realised that I still have that wrapper that’s lying behind her… wow!

The Unforgettable First Hours: My Journey into Motherhood Begins

The echoes of shaking, the fading screams, and the last, profound sobs marked the end of an extraordinary ordeal. My childbirth experience, a whirlwind of intensity and raw emotion, culminated in one overwhelming desire: to hold my baby. It was a longing that overshadowed every discomfort, every lingering ache. As the midwives busied themselves, cleaning and swaddling her, I could hear her tiny, yet incredibly strong cries – a testament to her vibrant spirit. I lay on the sturdy delivery bed, my body a vessel slowly recovering from a truly ‘near-death’ experience, a journey to the very edge of my limits and back. With each passing moment, as the tremors in my body subsided and a sense of calm began to settle, my eagerness to finally see my precious seed, the fruit of nine months of anticipation, grew almost unbearable.

The First Embrace: A Love Story Unfolds

Finally, a radiant midwife, her face alight with a warm, knowing grin, brought her to me. The moment our eyes met, a wave of pure, unadulterated love washed over me, obliterating every memory of pain and exhaustion. Her delicate weight in my arms felt like the most perfect, natural fit. I clutched her close, offering a profound prayer of gratitude to God for this incredible blessing. In that sacred moment, I dedicated her life to the Lord, whispering fervent hopes that she would grow to fulfill her unique purpose on earth. This heartfelt prayer of dedication was my personal prologue to what felt like a brand-new chapter, a ‘New Baby Part 1’ unfolding right before my eyes. She was, without a doubt, a vision of pure beauty. Dressed in a charming machine-crocheted ensemble, her soft, pink face radiated an innocence, a profound quietude, and an undeniable sense of peace. The sheer joy that swelled in my heart, knowing I had brought such pure comeliness into the world, was immeasurable, a feeling beyond words or measure.

The arduous journey through the first, second, and third trimesters was now behind me. Those nine months of anticipation, morning sickness, cravings, and growing discomfort had culminated in this precious moment. With my baby finally in my arms, I felt an almost immediate shift, a deep-seated readiness to embrace my new life as a mother. Shortly after our initial bonding, I was gently moved to the maternity ward. To my pleasant surprise, the distinct, somewhat clinical “hospital stench” that had been undeniably present in the delivery room was absent here. Instead, my senses were greeted by the sophisticated and oddly comforting aroma of various foods wafting through the air, signaling a different kind of healing and sustenance. I settled into a rigid hospital bed, positioned at the far end of the room – the last empty bed available. Its solitary status was a silent, yet clear, testament to the flurry of new life around me, evidence that several women had chosen to be busy with their partners at the same time the previous year. The delightful result: a symphony of simultaneous births and a vibrantly bustling, fully occupied hospital wing.

Navigating the Maternity Ward: A Tapestry of New Beginnings

The maternity ward was a fascinating microcosm of new motherhood, a space teeming with diverse personalities and fresh emotions. I observed a new mother across the room, her gaze fixed lovingly on her infant, an unwavering stare that spoke volumes of pure adoration. She was clearly, utterly, and irrevocably in love. Yet, as is often the case when two or three women are gathered, a certain theatrical flair tends to emerge. This time, the crown of ‘drama queen’ was undoubtedly worn by my bed neighbour. She retrieved a large piece of traditional wrapper and proceeded to tie it around her tummy with an almost alarming firmness, creating an impression as though she were attempting a non-surgical, self-imposed tummy tuck, seemingly on a mission to reshape her post-delivery body with immediate, drastic effect. She voiced continuous complaints about her husband’s insistence that she maintain this tight binding, all in the name of regaining her pre-pregnancy figure. As she paced restlessly around the room, chewing on various snacks with an almost frantic energy, she gave the distinct impression of someone searching intently for something, perhaps a lost item, or more profoundly, a lost sense of self amidst the new chaos of motherhood.

Prior to delivery, I had meticulously planned a culinary revenge tour, envisioning myself indulging in every food item imaginable, a celebratory reclamation against the months of pregnancy-induced nausea that had often left me unable to eat. However, the sheer physical and emotional stress of childbirth had unexpectedly left me with a profound repugnance to food, a persistent sickness churning in the pit of my belly. The thought of eating was not merely at the bottom of my list; it was entirely off it. My body, utterly weary and drained, craved one thing above all else: sleep. A deep, restorative slumber was the single most urgent item I needed to check off my mental list.

Postpartum Nourishment and the Relentless Pursuit of Rest

My mother, ever attentive and practical, quickly materialized beside my bed, holding a warm cup of Ovaltine and milk. I politely declined, reiterating my complete lack of hunger, but her gentle insistence was firm. “You need something in your stomach so you can feed the baby,” she stated, her words carrying the weight of generational wisdom and unwavering care. Recognizing the futility of resistance, I succumbed, slowly but steadily gulping down the comforting beverage. This, I soon realized, was my unofficial initiation into the “fattening sessions” that many new mothers undergo after delivery – a cultural rite of passage emphasizing nourishment for milk production. Shortly after the tea, a steaming bowl of Pepper Soup was presented. Then, before I could fully digest the first offering, it was followed by a hearty plate of Rice and Stew. The chorus from family members and midwives was constant: a full tummy, they asserted, was absolutely essential for a decent, nourishing flow of breast milk. While I appreciated their care, a part of me, exhausted and overwhelmed, jokingly labeled them “enemies of progress” in my quest for much-needed rest.

Adding to the challenge of finding rest was the steady stream of well-wishers. Aunties, uncles, friends, and various loved ones continuously arrived, making the prospect of a sweet, undisturbed beauty sleep utterly impossible. As I lay on the bed, feeling the worn fabric of the faded hospital gown, I became acutely aware of the realities of postpartum recovery. The relentless post-partum bleeding soaked the heavy pads I wore, and inevitably, drenched the crisp white hospital bedsheet beneath me. It was a constant, uncomfortable reminder of the profound changes my body had just undergone. Despite the discomfort, the hospital staff were wonderfully efficient, and the soiled bedsheets were eventually, and mercifully, changed, offering a brief respite from the physical unpleasantness.

The Sacred Bond: My First Breastfeeding Experience

Throughout my pregnancy, I had diligently consumed numerous pregnancy books, absorbing every piece of advice and preparing myself for the arrival of my baby. One key piece of information that resonated with me was the importance of initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of delivery. Eager to put theory into practice, I expressed my desire to breastfeed my newborn. My pastor’s wife, a kind and experienced woman who was tenderly tending to me, gently brought my baby over so I could attempt her first feeding. I tried to recall and replicate the techniques I had observed in other mothers, attempting to coax my baby to latch. Her tiny lips moved instinctively, searching, rooting, but despite her efforts, I struggled to achieve a proper latch. My tiny nipple seemed to evade her grasp, and a wave of frustration mixed with inadequacy began to creep in. Sensing my struggle, my pastor’s wife quickly came to my aid, guiding my hand and attempting to place my small nipple into my newborn’s eager mouth. As she patiently persevered, an elderly woman from the ward, who seemed to possess an encyclopedic knowledge of all things childbirth, joined us. The three of us, a formidable trio, battled frantically, determined to help me initiate breastfeeding for the very first time. It felt as though we were tackling a crisis of global proportions, like trying to solve the complex conflicts of the Middle East, such was the intensity of our collective effort. In the end, through perseverance and shared wisdom, success finally arrived. The tiny lips began to suck rhythmically, stimulating the vital flow of colostrum, the ‘liquid gold’ that would nourish my baby in her first precious days.

After the momentous first feeding, I finally gathered the strength to stand and take my first bath after delivery. This was more than just a cleansing ritual; it was an opportunity to confront and assess my after-pregnancy body. My pregnant elephant ankles, which had swollen to an astonishing size, were still stubbornly present. My tummy, while no longer housing a baby, still looked semi-pregnant, a disconcerting sight that made me momentarily wonder if the midwives had forgotten my daughter’s imaginary twin inside. It was initially depressing to behold the ‘whale’ I felt I had become, a stark contrast to my former self. Yet, as I looked at my baby, so peaceful and perfect, every single change, every stretch mark, every lingering ache, felt profoundly worth it. After my bath, I donned a comfortable nightgown, adhering to the traditional custom of postpartum women in Cameroon. Finally, feeling refreshed and renewed, I settled back into bed, eager to snuggle close with my daughter, ready to embrace the quiet intimacy of our new beginning.
