The name ‘Penjo’ is a creative fusion derived from my two given names. ‘Pe’ is elegantly extracted from Peter, and ‘Njo’ comes from Njodzeka, seamlessly combining to form Pe-Njo. The addition of ‘Baba’ has a fascinating origin story from Nigeria. This esteemed title was bestowed upon me in 2012 while I was actively involved in covering the prestigious Miss University Africa competition. During that event, I was tirelessly capturing images daily, and the consistent quality and artistic excellence of my work deeply impressed the Nigerian organizers and participants. Their profound respect for my photographic prowess led them to affectionately and respectfully address me as ‘Baba,’ a term that signifies a respected elder or a master of a craft in many West African cultures. It stuck, and I’ve carried it with pride ever since, as it symbolizes the recognition and admiration earned through my dedication to photography.

The Unexpected Path to Photography: A Calling Discovered

Your dedication to your craft is truly palpable. What initially ignited this profound love for photography and cinematography?

My journey into photography and cinematography was entirely serendipitous, far from any initial plan. Back in 2005, while I was pursuing studies in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), I stumbled upon an inspiring U.S.-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) called Engineers Without Borders. Their mission immediately resonated with me. After thoroughly researching their initiatives, I reached out, and we eventually forged a partnership, collaborating on a vital water project in Nkuv, Cameroon. This initial experience opened my eyes to the power of community service. Following that, I began working with another remarkable U.S.-based NGO, Thirst Relief International, focusing on similar humanitarian efforts.

It was during my time providing community service that a crucial requirement emerged: I needed to submit complementary pictures with my monthly reports. The only catch? I didn’t own a camera. So, I would diligently borrow an analog camera from a friend, capturing the necessary images to document our progress. Jim Hicks, the chairperson of Thirst Relief International and an accomplished photographer himself, was consistently impressed by the quality of my photographs. His encouragement and appreciation were instrumental. This is precisely how my deep interest in photography was kindled. I began an intensive period of self-study, devouring knowledge on how to refine my burgeoning talent and master the art of visual storytelling. Eventually, through persistent saving, I acquired my very first professional camera, a pivotal moment that also marked the official birth of my brand, ‘Penjo Entertainment.’ This organic discovery and the unwavering support I received transformed a simple task into a lifelong passion.

You mentioned ‘Penjo Entertainment.’ Could you elaborate on the scope of work undertaken by this dynamic brand?

Penjo Entertainment is far more than just a photography studio; it’s a comprehensive production house, a vibrant hub that oversees everything within the realm of entertainment and showbiz. I proudly founded it in 2007, driven by a vision to elevate the African creative landscape. Under our brand, we engage in a diverse array of services, showcasing our versatility and commitment to artistic excellence. This includes full-scale movie production, bringing compelling narratives to life on screen, and crafting visually stunning music video shoots that amplify the artistry of musicians. Naturally, professional photography remains a cornerstone of our work, capturing moments with precision and artistic flair.

Beyond production, Penjo Entertainment is deeply involved in nurturing talent and celebrating culture. We organize and produce engaging talent shows, providing platforms for emerging artists to shine. We also conceptualize and execute glamorous beauty and fashion shows, highlighting African aesthetics and design. Indeed, the beginning of this journey was anything but easy. The most significant challenge was the steep learning curve, as I largely had to teach myself the intricacies of photography and cinematography. In an era where formal institutions for these crafts were scarce or inaccessible, the internet became my most invaluable university. I am eternally grateful for the abundance of online tutorials and resources that allowed me to continuously learn, experiment, and refine my skills through countless hours of dedicated practice. It was a period of intense self-education, driven purely by passion and an unyielding desire to master my chosen art form.

Even today, with Penjo Entertainment well-established, a primary and ongoing challenge remains the effective marketing of my works. The creative industry, particularly in Africa, requires innovative strategies to reach wider audiences and secure impactful projects. Building a strong brand, navigating competitive markets, and ensuring my artistic output reaches its intended viewers and clients are continuous efforts. It’s a dynamic landscape, and while the self-teaching phase was tough, the constant evolution of marketing strategies presents its own unique set of hurdles.

(Laughs heartily) Ah, ‘Peace Offering’! Those were truly unforgettable days, filled with raw passion but little direction. At that point in my career, my heart was already set on being behind the cameras, visualizing and creating stories. However, the industry then was such that those positions were heavily occupied. So, driven by a desire to simply be part of the filmmaking process, I decided to try my hand at acting. I remember featuring as one of the village warriors, a minor but spirited role. Honestly, when I watch that movie now, I can’t help but laugh at myself throughout the scenes! My acting might have been, shall we say, ‘enthusiastic’ rather than polished. Nevertheless, it was an absolutely great time, a valuable experience that allowed me to appreciate the film production process from a different perspective and ultimately reinforced my decision to be a filmmaker rather than an actor. It was a foundational step, a hilarious detour that led me right back to my true calling.

What truly unifies them, and why I hold them all in equally high regard, is their underlying purpose: they all contribute, in some way, to changing people’s lives. Whether it’s through shedding light on important social issues in a documentary, inspiring aspiring artists in a talent show, or simply creating beautiful art that evokes emotion, each project serves a greater good.

Because of this shared mission of impact and transformation, I genuinely see all my projects as fundamentally similar in their core value and significance. The medium might change – film, photography, live event – but the intention to connect, inspire, and make a positive difference remains constant. This intrinsic link makes it impossible to pick a single favorite; they are all integral threads in the larger tapestry of my creative and philanthropic journey.

It’s truly heartwarming to see them engaging with my cameras. At this stage, I simply believe they are growing up and naturally gravitate towards what they see me doing, which they clearly love. Sometimes they’ll just pick up one of my cameras and start exploring, mimicking my actions. While I wouldn’t presume to decide their career paths for them, I absolutely cherish seeing them observe and appreciate my work. It’s a wonderful feeling to know they notice the passion I pour into my craft.

However, if I were ever blessed with a female child, I would be particularly keen to see her pursue a career in this field. It’s undeniably a significant challenge for women, especially in Africa, to break into and thrive in traditionally male-dominated industries like photography and cinematography. Yet, I hold a strong belief that with dedication, talent, and unwavering support, women can achieve remarkable success in this line of work. Empowering them to overcome these societal barriers and excel creatively would be a deeply fulfilling aspect of my legacy.

For those who look up to your achievements and aspire to emulate your success, what invaluable advice would you offer?

To anyone dreaming of making their mark in the creative industry, my advice is multifaceted yet rooted in fundamental principles. Firstly, you must set your goals incredibly high, beyond what you might initially think is possible. Then, dedicate yourself to working towards those ambitious goals every single day, as if no other dreams exist. This level of focus and unwavering commitment is paramount. Hard work is non-negotiable; it is the bedrock upon which all success is built.

However, beyond ambition and effort, certain human qualities come first and are, in my view, even more crucial. Humility is essential; always be open to learning, to critiques, and to acknowledging that there’s always more to discover. Respect for your peers, your mentors, your clients, and indeed, for your craft itself, will open doors and build lasting relationships. Consistency is the key to mastery; showing up, delivering quality work repeatedly, and maintaining your standards over time will distinguish you. And finally, and perhaps most importantly, operate from a place of love – love for what you do, love for the stories you tell, and love for the people you collaborate with. These virtues will not only propel your career but also enrich your entire journey.

Furthermore, I am deeply committed to extending my impact beyond commercial endeavors.

I will continue to actively engage in improving communities through a robust portfolio of charity and entertainment projects. This involves leveraging Penjo Entertainment’s resources and influence to support social causes, nurture emerging talent, and bring meaningful entertainment to wider audiences. What are your personal hobbies when you step away from the lens?

When I manage to put the cameras down – and believe me, I am absolutely addicted to them! – my main hobbies revolve around experiencing the world. I love traveling, exploring new places and cultures. Of course, my work often takes me to new locations, which is a fantastic bonus. Beyond that, I simply enjoy working; it’s not just a profession but a passion. And, naturally, I love eating, savoring good meals.

Speaking of good meals, what is your ultimate favorite dish?

Without a doubt, it’s Ndole and Yam. A classic and truly satisfying combination.
