As the days grow shorter and a crispness enters the air, there’s an undeniable shift in the atmosphere, signaling the full embrace of the autumn season. Just last week, the air buzzed with a unique energy as Halloween celebrations unfolded across our neighborhoods. It’s a time of year that certainly sparks conversation and invites us to reflect on the traditions we choose to embrace, and perhaps, those we respectfully choose to forgo.

On Saturday evening, I observed a delightful parade of imagination right outside my window. My neighbors’ children, brimming with excitement, paraded in an array of vibrant costumes. I spotted a whimsical little girl adorned as a classic witch, another transformed into an ancient princess, and a spirited young boy embodying the heroic essence of Spiderman. The joy and creativity were palpable, painting a vivid picture of childhood wonder.

My own children, however, chose not to participate in the festivities this year. While they initially felt a gentle nudge from peer pressure, we had a heartfelt discussion about our family’s values and beliefs. For us, Halloween, with its prevailing themes of witches, ghosts, and graveyards, doesn’t quite resonate with our spiritual outlook. It seems the “god of this world,” as scripture describes, is adept at distracting people, pulling attention away from deeper, more meaningful pursuits. Nevertheless, our stance comes from a place of conviction, aiming to nurture a foundation built on different principles.

Despite our family’s decision not to partake in the dressing up, I remain fascinated by the creativity and effort people put into their Halloween displays.
