Stepping into a new state, especially one as vibrant and historically rich as Tennessee, is always an adventure. This past March, my family and I embarked on an unforgettable eight-day journey to Nashville, a city that instantly captured our hearts with its unique blend of Southern charm, unparalleled musical heritage, and mouth-watering cuisine. As a first-time visitor to the American South, I was incredibly eager to experience its renowned hospitality and culinary traditions, and Nashville certainly did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in an atmosphere that felt distinctively different from our usual SoCal routine – a refreshing change of pace that promised days filled with exploration, discovery, and delightful surprises.
Hello, wonderful readers! For those of you who have followed my blog over the years, you know that while I primarily share delicious recipes, I also love to share snippets of our family’s adventures. It feels wonderful to be back with a travel post, detailing our recent escapade. Packing our bags and leaving the sunny confines of Southern California for the lively streets of Nashville, Tennessee, was an exciting prospect for everyone, especially the girls. Welcome to Music City: Our First Impressions
The journey from Southern California to Nashville was filled with chatter and anticipation, especially from our five children, including our littlest one. Arriving in Nashville for the very first time was an experience in itself. The air felt different, imbued with a distinct Southern charm that was immediately noticeable. Everything from the architecture to the friendly smiles we encountered seemed to whisper tales of hospitality and a rich cultural tapestry. As we settled into our hotel, we couldn’t wait to start exploring this iconic city, known globally as “Music City.” The vibrancy was infectious, promising an adventure unlike any other.
To give you a glimpse into our arrival and the initial moments of our Nashville adventure, I’ve put together a video capturing our departure from SoCal and our very first steps in this incredible city. It truly encapsulates the excitement and awe we all felt upon landing in Tennessee.
A Culinary Journey Through Nashville
One of my biggest excitements about visiting a Southern state was undoubtedly the food. I had always dreamed of savoring authentic Southern dishes, and Nashville presented the perfect opportunity to turn those dreams into a delicious reality. Our culinary exploration began with the city’s most iconic dish: Nashville Hot Chicken. The fiery, flavorful crunch was an immediate hit, offering a unique taste experience that truly lives up to its legendary reputation. Beyond the heat, we sampled an array of delightful offerings from some of Nashville’s most celebrated eateries.
Popular spots like Biscuit Love and Five Daughters Bakery were high on my list. Anticipating the notoriously long lines that often accompany such beloved establishments, especially when traveling with five young children and a baby, I relied heavily on the convenience of online ordering. This allowed us to enjoy the best of Nashville’s dining scene without the hassle of extensive waiting, proving to be an absolute lifesaver for our family! The ability to pick up our orders and enjoy them in the comfort of our hotel room or a quiet park made every meal a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
Among the many culinary delights, the grits from Biscuit Love left a particularly memorable impression. Creamy, savory, and perfectly seasoned, they were a revelation and instantly became a new favorite. And for those with a sweet tooth, the strawberry doughnuts from Five Daughters Bakery were simply irresistible. Each bite was a burst of fresh berry flavor, encased in a perfectly soft, delicate dough – a truly indulgent treat that we still talk about.
Exploring the Nashville Farmer’s Market and Hotel Kitchenette Adventures
Another fantastic discovery was the bustling Nashville Farmer’s Market. It was a vibrant hub of local produce, artisanal goods, and diverse food vendors. To my pleasant surprise, nestled within the market was a grocery store specializing in African food products. This unexpected find was a true highlight! Being able to source ingredients like fresh red snapper fish and ripe plantains allowed me to bring a piece of home-cooked comfort to our trip. We stocked up on these, along with other fresh ingredients, eager to utilize the well-equipped kitchenette in our hotel room.
Having a kitchenette in our hotel room was, without exaggeration, one of the best aspects of our accommodation. It offered immense flexibility and allowed us to prepare some of our meals, making our long stay feel more homely and economical. I cherished the opportunity to cook for my family amidst our travels. One evening, I whipped up a delicious meal of whole pan-fried red snapper, perfectly complemented by sweet fried plantains and a vibrant avocado salsa. It was a taste of home in the heart of Nashville, and the joy of preparing it was immense. You can even catch a glimpse of my hotel kitchen cooking adventures in the video below, illustrating how we made the most of this wonderful amenity!
Beyond the fish and plantains, I also managed to conjure up some incredibly delicious fried chicken wings in our tiny but mighty hotel kitchen. They were absolutely “to die for,” as the saying goes! It’s a culinary regret that I didn’t capture any photographic evidence of those crispy, succulent wings, but their memory remains vivid. It just goes to show what you can achieve with a little creativity and a well-appointed space, even when traveling.
A Delightful Start to Each Day: Hotel Breakfast
Our hotel further enhanced our stay with a complimentary breakfast that was, hands down, one of the best we’ve ever experienced during our travels. It offered an impressive spread that catered to every taste, ensuring everyone in our family started their day energized and satisfied. The offerings included freshly made waffles, a variety of toasts and bagels, fluffy omelettes, hearty oatmeal, savory sausages, and so much more. This diverse and delicious breakfast not only saved us time and money but also provided a consistently pleasant beginning to each day of our Nashville exploration. You’ll be able to see the full extent of this amazing hotel breakfast in the concluding video of this post!
Unforgettable Moments and Highlights of Our Nashville Adventure
Our eight days in Nashville were packed with memorable experiences, but certain moments truly stood out, etching themselves into our family’s collective memory. Beyond the fantastic food, the city itself offered a vibrant backdrop for exploration and discovery, proving why it’s a top destination for family vacations.
A Charming City Tour with Old Town Trolleys
One of the best ways we kicked off our sightseeing was by taking a city tour with Old Town Trolleys. It was an excellent decision, providing an engaging and comprehensive overview of Nashville’s key landmarks and history. Our driver was not just a guide but a genuine entertainer, whose witty commentary and humorous anecdotes brought the city’s stories to life. He skillfully navigated us through the streets, pointing out iconic sites while sharing fascinating facts, all delivered with an authentic Southern charm that kept us laughing and thoroughly engaged. It was an effortless way to see a lot of the city comfortably, especially with children.
The Warmth of Southern Hospitality and Music City Vibes
Throughout our trip, we were continually impressed by the genuine friendliness of the people in Nashville. From casual encounters on the street to the dedicated staff at our hotel, everyone we met seemed genuinely happy to interact. The hotel staff, in particular, made us feel like an extension of their own family. They consistently took the time for little conversations, offering recommendations or simply sharing a friendly smile as we passed through the lobby. This relaxed and welcoming atmosphere contributed significantly to the overall enjoyment of our stay, making us feel truly at home.
Then there’s Broadway – an absolute spectacle and arguably the happiest street I’ve ever encountered! The energy here is electrifying. Live bands spill out of countless honky-tonk bars, each venue pulsating with incredible music, from classic country to blues and rock. People were dancing, singing along, and simply “vibing” to the infectious rhythms. The sight of party buses, some equipped with their own DJs, cruising down the street with passengers dancing and cheering, perfectly encapsulated the exuberant spirit of Music City. It’s truly a place where music is not just heard, but felt in every fiber of your being, affirming Nashville’s well-deserved title.
Immersing Ourselves in Nashville’s Musical Legacy: Museums and Walks
No trip to Nashville would be complete without acknowledging its profound musical heritage. Walking along the Music Walk of Fame, located adjacent to the impressive Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, was an inspiring experience. Seeing the stars dedicated to legendary artists, both past and present, was a powerful reminder of the countless talents that have shaped America’s musical landscape. We had initially planned to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, but upon seeing the incredibly long queue stretching out the door, we opted to respectfully skip it this time, knowing we had other musical explorations planned.
Instead, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. It’s important not to confuse this with the Country Music Hall of Fame, as the Musicians Hall of Fame celebrates the often-unsung heroes behind many iconic recordings – the session musicians. This museum was a hands-on delight for our family! We loved the interactive exhibits, especially the opportunity to play various instruments and create our own impromptu musical pieces. It was a fantastic way for the girls to engage with music in a tangible, exciting way, fostering their creativity and appreciation for the artistry involved.
