A Journey Through Time: Embracing 27 and Beyond
Sometimes, the birthday cake gracing our table seems almost too modest, a stark contrast to the elaborate confections often seen at grand parties or on glossy television screens. If it boasts any icing, it’s usually a testament to my own well-intentioned but often clumsy attempts – a slightly mushy, delightfully disorganised frosting that speaks of effort rather than culinary finesse. Yet, despite its humble appearance, the sheer joy and heartfelt warmth that accompany these simple celebrations are, for my family, utterly unparalleled. The anticipation of another year, another milestone for a loved one, always brings an unbeatable sense of happiness.
I find myself frequently reminiscing about those cherished days of my youth, filled with laughter and playful teasing among my siblings during our little birthday get-togethers. These were never lavish affairs designed to impress, but rather intimate family moments dedicated to prayer, shared jokes, and simple meals. Even my father, a man generally less inclined towards social gatherings, would eagerly rush home to partake in these precious moments. Looking back, these traditions undeniably enriched our lives, fostering a deep sense of connection and belonging that continues to resonate with me.
As I officially mark my 27th year this year, my mind is a bustling landscape of thoughts and reflections. The usual celebratory gathering with my beloved siblings won’t be happening, a bittersweet reality given the significant miles that now separate us. Furthermore, I have two energetic toddlers constantly running around me, whose innocent minds are perhaps still too young to fully grasp the profound blessing and quiet significance of adding another year to one’s life. Their world, for now, is one of immediate discovery and boundless energy, a stark but beautiful contrast to the contemplative reflections that define this particular birthday for me.
A Tapestry of Transitions: My Formative Years
When I cast my gaze backward, I see a remarkably tiny human being who has not only grown in age but has also matured deeply and accumulated a wealth of experiences and achievements. My primary school years were marked by a period of considerable instability for my parents, which led to a rather unique educational journey for me. I distinctly recall attending three different primary schools in three entirely different towns, each presenting its own set of challenges and opportunities. This early exposure to varied environments, new faces, and constant adjustments undeniably shaped my adaptability and perspective on life.
My mother, a woman of immense ambition and unwavering determination, was actively pursuing her own education during our formative years. This meant that my childhood was a constant shuffle between the comforting embrace of my grandparents’ home and the more transient setting of my mother’s hostel room. These transitions, though at times challenging, allowed me to witness and experience the multifaceted nature of life from a young age. Each move, each new setting, presented a different face of existence, teaching me resilience and the capacity to adapt to ever-changing circumstances.
My journey has been one of profound transformation, moving from the carefree existence of a “Daddy’s girl” – one who delighted in car rides with her father and savored delicious treats – to the demanding reality of a farm girl. This latter phase involved trekking for hours, often under the relentless sun, to fetch firewood, a task that demanded both physical endurance and a deep connection to the land. I’ve known mornings where my breakfast consisted of simple bread and tea, a humble meal that nonetheless provided sustenance. And I’ve also experienced days where nourishment came in the form of leftover porridged cocoyams, a stark reminder of life’s simpler, less glamorous moments. These contrasts, far from being sources of regret, have instilled in me a profound appreciation for every facet of life and a deep understanding of human experience.
The Most Profound Shift: A Spiritual Awakening
Yet, amidst all these external shifts and personal growth, the most significant and transformative transition I have ever experienced has been the decision to accept Christ into my life and, subsequently, to cultivate a deeply personal and evolving relationship with Him. From the precise moment I made that life-altering decision, my entire trajectory took a distinctly different course. It was a pivotal turning point, a profound reorientation of my compass, and for this divine intervention, I am more than just grateful – I am eternally thankful that He sought me out and found me amidst the complexities of my journey. This spiritual anchor has provided a steadfast foundation, guiding me through triumphs and tribulations alike, and imbuing my life with purpose and an abiding sense of peace.
Cultivating Discipline: The Power of Early Mornings
As I step into my 27th year, I feel a renewed impetus to amplify my strengths and diligently work towards refining areas where I fall short. This isn’t about striving for immediate, unattainable perfection, but rather a focused commitment to consistent improvement. I firmly believe it is far more effective to concentrate on consistently doing the few right things we genuinely understand, rather than being overwhelmed by the monumental task of trying to get everything absolutely perfect all at once. This principle of intentional, incremental progress is now a cornerstone of my approach to self-development.
My foremost ‘right thing’ – a habit I am committed to establishing and maintaining – is to wake up on time. The wisdom of scripture, specifically Proverbs 31:15, speaks of the virtuous woman who “rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and tasks for her maidens.” For many years, despite my earnest desire, I have struggled with the consistency of waking up early enough. This inconsistency has often left me feeling as though I’m playing catch-up, starting my day on the back foot. The aspiration to become an early riser has always been a persistent whisper in my heart, a desire for greater discipline and productivity.
Throughout history and across various traditions, great individuals have often been lauded for their commitment to waking in the early hours. The Bible recounts that Jesus himself rose “very early in the morning, while it was still dark,” to pray (Mark 1:35), demonstrating the profound spiritual power and clarity that can be found in the quietude of dawn. Similarly, King David expressed his intention to “seek God early in the morning,” understanding the spiritual and mental advantages of dedicating the freshest part of the day to reflection and communion. These examples serve as powerful motivations, underscoring the timeless wisdom behind embracing the early hours.
There is an undeniable, almost magical quality about starting one’s day early. On the days I manage to rise with the sun, I invariably feel a surge of energy, a sense of readiness and purpose that propels me through my tasks with remarkable efficiency. The world seems quieter, the mind clearer, and the potential for productive work or quiet contemplation feels boundless. Conversely, when I succumb to the temptation of a later start, the entire day often begins sluggishly, a slow unfolding that leaves me feeling perpetually behind and less engaged. It is high time I seize consistent control of my mornings, recognizing them as invaluable periods for personal growth, spiritual renewal, and focused activity.

A Heart Full of Gratitude
I pause now to express my profound gratitude to God for having brought me this far, for His ceaseless preservation, His comforting presence in times of distress, and for being my most trusted and unwavering best friend through every season of my life. As I reflect on this journey, I am actively counting my blessings, and it is truly astonishing to witness the sheer magnitude of what He has done, the intricate ways in which His hand has guided and sustained me. Every challenge overcome, every joy experienced, every lesson learned is a testament to His boundless grace and enduring faithfulness.
Thank you deeply for taking the time to read my reflections today. I look forward to connecting with you again, and sharing more insights and stories, in the next post.
P.S.: Interestingly, I originally penned this entire post for my 27th birthday over a year ago. For reasons I can only vaguely attribute to the whirlwind of life – perhaps it was indeed the fluctuating hormones of that season, or simply the overwhelming demands of everyday existence – I never actually published it. Finding it now, fully formed and still so relevant, feels like a serendipitous discovery, a testament to the enduring nature of these reflections.
