An Epic 30-Hour Family Road Trip: California to Minnesota and Back
This past May, my family embarked on what can only be described as an epic adventure: a 30-hour road trip from California all the way to Minnesota. When I say “my family,” I mean my incredible husband, Mr. N, myself, and our four energetic children, all aged eight and under. Yes, you read that right – four young kids in a car for 30 hours! Looking back, it feels like a monumental feat. Having successfully navigated the journey from California to Minnesota and then back again, I’m convinced we can conquer any road trip, anywhere in the world. It was truly an unforgettable experience!
To ensure the trip was as smooth as possible for our little crew, we strategically planned numerous breaks. These stops weren’t just for quick bathroom visits; they were opportunities for the kids to stretch their legs, for us to grab delicious meals, and most importantly, to soak in some of the stunning American landscapes we passed through. Prior to our departure, I meticulously packed a massive bag filled with an array of snacks, fresh fruits, and all sorts of kid-friendly bites. This thoughtful preparation meant that hunger was never an issue, keeping spirits high throughout our long drive.
My thoughtful husband, Mr. N, went the extra mile to set up mini-screens for the girls, allowing them to watch their favorite CDs. This simple yet effective entertainment strategy proved invaluable, keeping them engaged and preventing boredom from setting in. Their joyful chatter and occasional quiet focus on their shows made the long hours fly by much faster than anticipated.
Interestingly, after enduring such a marathon drive, the concept of a two-hour car ride now feels incredibly trivial to me. It’s amazing how perspective shifts after a 30-hour journey, even though I must humbly admit that my sweet hubby did all the driving. His dedication and endurance made the entire trip possible, and I’m endlessly grateful for his unwavering spirit behind the wheel.

One aspect of the American road trip experience that I surprisingly missed was the unique roadside food culture I grew up with. In my birth country, Cameroon, taking a road trip is synonymous with delightful culinary stops in small towns, where vibrant roadside vendors offer an array of incredible treats. I reminisce about the succulent roasted plum, a buttery African fruit distinct from its American counterpart, and the unbelievably flavorful grilled fish, charred to perfection over an open charcoal fire – a taste that is truly epic! Then there’s suya, spicy skewered meat, alongside sweet roasted plantains, tender roasted corn, and countless other delectable goodies that transform a simple journey into a gastronomic adventure. The food back home undeniably elevates the fun factor of road trips, and I truly miss those Cameroonian treats.
However, what I absolutely adored about our American road trip were the breathtaking views! I found immense joy and spiritual solace in the panoramic vistas of nature unfolding before us—the rugged rocks, majestic canyons, and towering mountains. Each landscape was a powerful reminder of the divine Creator behind it all. I simply couldn’t get enough of these stunning natural masterpieces, feeling a deep connection to the earth’s raw beauty. Are you, too, a lover of nature’s grandeur? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

During our travels, I captured several videos of our adventures, with the initial intention of sharing them on my YouTube channel. However, I’ve hesitated because my channel, “Precious Kitchen,” is primarily dedicated to cooking content, and a road trip doesn’t quite align with that theme. This has left me pondering: Is a family road trip something you, my wonderful audience, would still enjoy seeing on Precious Kitchen? Or would it make more sense for me to consider creating a separate channel specifically for lifestyle content like travel vlogs? Your input is incredibly valuable to me, so please share your thoughts in the comments below.
The primary reason for our arduous journey was to attend Mr. N’s graduation ceremony—a truly momentous occasion. My incredible husband has dedicated countless hours to diligently pursuing his bachelor’s degree. Witnessing his perseverance and ultimate success has filled me with immeasurable pride. Juggling a demanding full-time job, full-time studies, and the responsibilities of caring for a family is no small feat, yet he tackled it all with remarkable grace and determination. His achievement is a testament to his unwavering commitment and hard work, and it inspires us all.

The Joys and Jitters of Moving House: Settling into Our New Southern California Home
Yes, my friends, we have officially moved house again! This experience has been a compelling mix of sheer excitement and utter exhaustion. Moving is never an easy process, regardless of how many times you’ve done it. I’m incredibly grateful that I started packing well in advance, which significantly reduced the overwhelming stress often associated with the final stages of a move. Even with meticulous planning, the sheer volume of tasks and decisions involved can be incredibly draining.
As some of you might recall, we made a significant move last year, transitioning from the colder climes of Minnesota to the sunny warmth of California. This year, our move was within Southern California itself, but it represents a fresh start in a brand new home. And let me tell you, I am absolutely obsessed with our new place! There’s a vibrant energy and a sense of possibility that fills every room, making it feel like a true sanctuary.
My mind is buzzing with countless ideas for decorating and styling our new space. Sometimes, instead of tackling the practical tasks of unpacking and organizing, I find myself lost in the delightful process of planning decor. I know, as an adult, the sensible thing to do is to completely finish unpacking before diving into design schemes. However, it’s been incredibly challenging to resist dreaming about all the wonderful ways I want to infuse our new house with warmth, personality, and the feeling of home. Each room sparks new inspiration, from paint colors to furniture arrangements, and I’m eager to bring these visions to life.
Perhaps my absolute favorite feature of our new abode is the expansive backyard. While it’s currently just a patch of dirt, I envision it transforming into a vibrant oasis. My dreams for this space are grand: a lush garden, a cozy seating area for family gatherings, perhaps a play zone for the kids, and even a peaceful retreat for myself. I am profoundly grateful for this home; it feels like an extraordinary gift. I am continually in awe of how God consistently provides for us, guiding us to places that exceed our wildest expectations. This new chapter in Southern California promises to be filled with growth, joy, and countless cherished memories.
For those eager to catch a glimpse of our new home, I recently shared a video on my YouTube channel. You can see bits and pieces of our living space and get a sense of the fresh canvas we’re working with. Check out this video to join me on a mini-tour!
Embracing the Unexpected: My New Black Kitchen Design
Speaking of our fabulous new home, I must tell you about the heart of any household: the kitchen! My new kitchen is here, and it’s a complete departure from what I initially envisioned. It’s not white, which has always been my dream kitchen aesthetic. Instead, it features striking black cabinets, and to my pleasant surprise, I absolutely LOVE it! The sleek finish on these black cabinets is simply exquisite, adding a touch of modern sophistication to our home.
While my heart was initially set on a pristine white kitchen, I’m thoroughly enjoying the process of learning to embrace these bold black cabinets. There’s a certain elegance and drama they bring to the space that I’m growing to appreciate more and more each day. Who knows, perhaps in the distant future, I might decide to paint them white, but for now, black is truly where it’s at! It feels fresh, stylish, and unexpectedly chic. I can barely contain my excitement for the next cooking video I’ll be sharing with you; it will feature this beautiful, spacious black kitchen as its backdrop. Get ready for a whole new aesthetic on “Precious Kitchen”!
Three Years Strong: Our Homeschooling Journey Reflections
This past July 4th held a special significance for our family, marking a remarkable three-year milestone in our homeschooling journey. I vividly remember the day I embarked on this adventure: July 4th, three years ago. I intentionally began our homeschooling curriculum in July, well before the traditional school year typically commences in September. My reasoning was simple yet practical: if it didn’t work out, I’d have ample time to enroll my girls in conventional school by September. It was a leap of faith, an experiment to see if this path was truly right for us.
But here we are, three years later, not only still homeschooling but thriving and going strong! I am incredibly thankful to God for guiding us through this journey and for the blessings it has brought to our family. It’s been a path of learning, growth, challenges, and immense joy, far exceeding any expectations I might have had at the outset. Homeschooling has allowed us to tailor education to our children’s unique needs and interests, fostering a love for learning that extends beyond textbooks.
And oh, the coincidence of the date! That inaugural July 4th also happens to be American Independence Day. I certainly didn’t plan it that way, but now, every time the Fourth of July rolls around, it serves as a powerful and beautiful reminder of the start of our homeschooling adventure—a journey that has granted us a different kind of freedom and independence in education. It’s a sweet, unplanned connection that adds an extra layer of meaning to an already significant day.
A Fresh Start: Unveiling the New Blog Design
As you may have already noticed, the blog has undergone a significant transformation and now sports a brand new look! This change wasn’t merely cosmetic; I had to update the old design primarily for technical reasons. Our previous platform was becoming outdated, leading to slower loading times and compatibility issues, especially on mobile devices. My goal with this redesign was to enhance user experience, improve site performance, and ensure the blog is responsive and accessible to everyone.
While creating the new design, I made a concerted effort to echo the familiarity and warmth of the old aesthetic as much as possible. However, given the necessary technical upgrades, there are naturally some delightful differences. I encourage you to take your time, explore the new layout, and discover all the exciting updates! You’ll find improved navigation, crisper visuals, and a generally smoother browsing experience. Your feedback is always welcome as we continue to refine things.
Rest assured, key functionalities remain intuitive and easy to use. For instance, the convenient search button is still prominently located on the right side of the blog. This tool is your go-to for finding any specific recipe you’re craving or simply browsing for new culinary inspiration. If you happen to encounter any difficulties navigating the new design or have suggestions for further improvements, please do not hesitate to reach out. Your comfort and enjoyment while visiting Precious Kitchen are my top priorities.
The Unwavering Spirit: A Personal Reflection on Why We Must Never Give Up
In life’s complex tapestry, there’s one resounding truth that has guided me through countless trials: never give up. This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a fundamental principle for navigating the inevitable storms we all encounter. Even when life becomes incredibly challenging, pushing you to the brink of despair, the most crucial thing is to hold onto that spark of resilience. You might feel overwhelmed, you might stumble, and you might even go down for a while. But the key is not to stay there. The true art of living lies in the ability to wake up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward. Mastering this art of unwavering persistence, especially when you know you are on the right path, is essential if we are to truly make it through life’s intricate journey and achieve our fullest potential.
It’s a common misconception that successful individuals are those who have never tasted failure. On the contrary, success is rarely a straight line; it’s often a zigzagging path paved with setbacks. True success is not the absence of failure, but rather the consistent ability to rise again and again, learning from each fall. Every stumble, every mistake, every moment of doubt becomes a stepping stone, refining your character and strengthening your resolve. It’s in these moments of rising that true growth occurs, forging a spirit that is both resilient and wise.
Throughout my journey with this blog, there have been countless moments when I’ve wanted to throw in the towel. The challenges of balancing family life, personal responsibilities, and the demands of creating consistent content can be overwhelming. There have been times of self-doubt, creative blocks, and the sheer exhaustion that comes with sustained effort. Yet, time and again, something pulls me back. It truly feels like a miracle, a profound privilege, that I get to share my passion with you all through this platform. I want you to understand that what you see here—the recipes, the stories, the community—is not just the product of talent or luck; it is, more profoundly, the result of a conscious decision to never give up. It’s the cumulative effect of pushing through discouragement, learning from mistakes, and consistently showing up.
My deepest hope is that this insight inspires you to persist in pursuing your own dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem. Understand that failures and setbacks are not just inconvenient interruptions; they are an integral and necessary part of your journey. They are designed to mold you, to teach you invaluable lessons, and to reveal strengths you never knew you possessed. Embrace them, learn from them, and let them refine you. If you allow them to, these challenges will only make you better, stronger, and more capable of achieving everything you aspire to be.
The Beautiful Chaos of Motherhood: Cherished Moments and New Adventures
So, my dear friends, this section is a peek into my world as a mama—a daily endeavor to pour my best into loving and nurturing these precious kiddos the Lord has so graciously entrusted into my hands. Motherhood is a tapestry woven with countless moments of joy, laughter, challenges, and profound love. It’s a continuous learning curve, and every day brings new lessons and unexpected delights.
This summer was particularly special for our older girls, who had the wonderful opportunity to attend kids’ camp at our church. They were absolutely bubbling with excitement, and it was truly heartwarming to see how much they learned and grew from the experience. They came back with new songs, new friends, and an even deeper understanding of their faith. I am so glad they were able to participate in such a enriching program; it gave them a fresh perspective and created lasting memories.

And then there’s Yoyo, our incredible big sister. She embodies patience and tenderness, always looking out for her younger siblings. Her natural inclination to nurture and protect fills my heart with pride; she truly is an amazing role model for the little ones.

It seems the older girls have also mastered the art of posing for pictures! Their creativity and confidence shine through in every snapshot, making every photo session a fun and lively experience. They truly embrace the moment, and I cherish these playful memories.

One of our favorite family outings this season was berry picking. We spent a delightful day in the sun, carefully plucking ripe, juicy berries directly from the bushes. The kids absolutely loved the experience, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about harvesting your own food. It was a beautiful day creating sweet, sticky memories together.

And of course, in true Precious Kitchen fashion, we’ve been indulging in some truly great food! From comforting family meals to exciting new recipes, our kitchen has been a hub of delicious activity. There’s nothing quite like gathering around the table to share a wonderful meal, especially after a busy day of family adventures.

As the summer days gracefully give way to autumn, we are now eagerly resuming our homeschooling routine this week. The girls are incredibly excited to dive back into their lessons, pick up new subjects, and explore fascinating topics. My hope for this upcoming academic year is that we not only continue to learn and grow but also create countless memories that will last a lifetime. Every day is an opportunity for connection, discovery, and building a stronger foundation for their future.
To all my wonderful friends and readers, I wish you a truly lovely week ahead. Please know that I hold each and every one of you in my heart. Thank you so much for being here, for your continued support, and for being a cherished part of the Precious Kitchen community. Your presence means the world to me!
