Embracing a Different Kind of Christmas
As December rolls in, the holiday spirit often conjures images of twinkling lights and adorned evergreen trees. Yet, this year, and for a few years now, our home remains without a Christmas tree. Since our big move to the United States, our approach to Christmas has fundamentally shifted, and with it, many of the traditions I once held dear.
Navigating Holiday Expectations
The absence of a Christmas tree in our living room isn’t due to a lack of festive spirit, but rather a blend of shifting life circumstances and evolving perspectives. My immediate family – my parents, brothers, and sisters – are not here with me. This geographical distance significantly alters the dynamics of our holiday celebrations, making the once-strong motivation to decorate feel a little different. Christmas, for me, has become a more intimate affair, focused on the present moment with my husband and children, rather than recreating past festivities.
Furthermore, I find myself holding somewhat conflicting views about the quintessential Christmas tree. While I absolutely adore the festive ambiance it creates, the way it transforms a home into a wonderland of lights and ornaments, I also don’t view it as an absolute necessity. The pressure to conform to widespread holiday decor expectations can sometimes overshadow the deeper, more personal meaning of the season. I must admit, there are moments when I feel a tad left out, a little unusual amidst the sea of beautifully decorated homes. I’ve even entertained plans to hang a few simple decorations, just for fun, but life’s everyday demands often take precedence, and those plans haven’t yet materialized.
So, if you too find yourself in a similar boat, perhaps without a towering fir tree in your living room, please know that you are genuinely not alone. The beauty of the holiday season lies not in external displays, but in the joy, peace, and reflection it brings to our hearts and homes, however that looks for you.
As we navigate this season, I always find profound joy and inspiration in understanding the true reason for the season. One of my most cherished Christmas reads is this illuminating post on 15 fascinating things that happened at the birth of Jesus. It offers a wonderful perspective beyond the tinsel and lights.

The Golden State’s December Charm
If there’s one aspect of California life that consistently fills me with awe and gratitude, it’s the truly magnificent weather. I honestly don’t think I will ever completely get over how consistently pleasant it is here, especially during what is often the chilliest month of the year elsewhere. The fact that we are enjoying leisurely walks and outdoor adventures in December still feels wonderfully surreal to me.
A Year-Round Vacation
It’s no exaggeration to say that since we relocated to California, a part of me has felt like I’ve been on an extended, glorious vacation. The stark contrast to climates I’ve experienced before is simply incredible. There are no harsh, biting winters, no daunting snow blizzards to contend with, and certainly no need for the arduous task of shoveling snow from driveways and walkways. This temperate climate is a dream come true for someone who appreciates the simple joy of stepping outside without bundling up in layers of heavy clothing.
The mild December weather means we can continue enjoying parks, taking strolls through nature, and soaking in the sunshine that graces us almost daily. This constant access to the outdoors profoundly impacts our daily routines and overall well-being. It allows for a more active lifestyle, reduces the cabin fever that often accompanies colder months, and undeniably lifts spirits. The ability to engage with nature year-round is a gift that California offers generously, and it’s a lifestyle I’ve wholeheartedly embraced. I could definitely get used to this perpetual feeling of sunshine and ease.

Back in the Kitchen: YouTube Video Updates
My dear friends and loyal subscribers, I must sincerely apologize for my recent absence on YouTube! The thought of not having uploaded a new cooking video for a while has honestly been weighing heavily on my mind. I know many of you look forward to new content, and I truly appreciate your patience and continued support.
The Creative Process and Production Challenges
Creating high-quality cooking videos is a passion project, but it also comes with its unique set of challenges. It’s not just about whipping up a delicious recipe; it involves meticulous planning, careful lighting, multiple camera angles, perfect ingredient preparation, and then hours of editing to ensure the final product is both informative and visually appealing. Lately, I’ve actually shot a few videos, but to be completely transparent, none of them have quite met the standards I set for myself. Whether it was an issue with the lighting, an unexpected glitch during filming, or simply the recipe not turning out perfectly on camera, I decided it was better to wait and deliver content that I am truly proud of.
However, with the holiday season in full swing and Christmas just around the corner, I am absolutely dedicated to releasing new content. I’m currently hard at work behind the scenes, pouring my heart into preparing two special videos designed to help you with your Christmas cooking endeavors. My goal is to release the first of these in the coming days, assuming everything goes smoothly with the final touches and editing. You know how the creative process can be!
I promise to keep you all thoroughly updated on my progress. Please keep an eye on my Instagram and Facebook stories, as well as my YouTube community page, where I’ll be sharing real-time announcements and sneak peeks. Thank you again for your understanding and enthusiasm; I can’t wait to share these new recipes with you!
Celebrating My Growing Family
Life at home is a whirlwind of laughter, milestones, and endless love. My babies, my greatest joys, are truly growing up at an astonishing pace. It’s a bittersweet symphony of emotions watching them transform right before my eyes.
Essie’s First Year: A Sweet Milestone
Can you believe that my sweet Baby Essie has officially turned one? Just saying it brings a rush of conflicting feelings. On one hand, I’m incredibly emotional, marveling at how quickly she’s growing and transforming from a tiny infant into a curious toddler. There’s a part of me that desperately wants to hold onto my baby forever, to savor every chubby fold and innocent gaze. Her sweetness is undeniable, her chubbiness simply irresistible, and every new discovery she makes fills our home with wonder. Yet, simultaneously, I’m bubbling with excitement about witnessing her future growth, the unfolding of her unique personality, and all the incredible things she will learn and do. It’s a delightful, yet emotionally complex, journey.
Capturing these precious moments in photographs, however, has become a comical struggle these days. Essie is a whirlwind of perpetual motion, always busy exploring and rarely sitting still for more than a fleeting second. When it came time to mark her 12-month milestone, the simple task of placing a sticker on her for a photo shoot turned into an epic battle of wills. She kept grabbing at it, tearing it in her little hands before I could even snap a proper shot. Eventually, I surrendered, placing the torn sticker strategically on the chair beside her, and managed to capture some genuinely adorable pictures of her beaming smile. It’s a testament to her vibrant energy and independent spirit, even at such a young age.

Salma at Seven: A Budding Chef and Loving Sister
Adding to the flurry of birthdays, Salma recently celebrated her seventh year! This incredible girl is becoming as obsessed with cooking as I am, a fact that both delights and slightly alarms me. She’s constantly asking to help, inquiring about ingredients, and threatening, in the most endearing way, to completely take over my kitchen someday soon! It’s a joy to see her passion ignite, and I love having her beside me as my little culinary apprentice.
For her birthday, her big sister poured so much love and creativity into making handmade gifts, including a beautiful paper crown, which Salma proudly wore. It’s truly heartwarming to witness the bond between my girls and see the effort they put into celebrating each other.
As for the birthday cake, Salma had a very specific request: my beloved lemon pound cake. So, of course, I baked it specially for her! Instead of dividing the batter into two pans as the recipe typically suggests, I poured the entire batch into a single bundt pan, creating a stunning, ring-shaped masterpiece. To elevate it further, we whipped up some lightly sweetened cream to generously cover the cake, and then adorned it with an assortment of fresh, vibrant fruits. It was a delicious celebration of her growing love for baking and sweet treats!

Navigating Birthday Season
With Essie and Salma’s birthdays in quick succession, we’re keenly aware that “birthday season” is truly upon us! It’s a delightful, albeit busy, period that seems to stretch for a good while once it begins in our home. We already have a few more exciting birthdays lined up for early next year, which means our calendar will be filled with even more celebrations, cake, and joy. Each birthday is a wonderful reminder of how precious and fleeting these moments are.
