Hello, dear readers! It’s wonderful to connect with you all once again, and you know how much I cherish sharing the intricate tapestry of my life’s stories here on the blog. We’ve journeyed through so many significant milestones together, from the joyous anticipation of my first pregnancy to the blissful calm of a second trimester and the challenging moments of an often-annoying third trimester. We’ve also navigated the deep sorrow of my painful miscarriage and celebrated the miracle of how prayer guided me through the birth of my second daughter. Each chapter has been unique, filled with lessons, laughter, and tears.

Today, I’m thrilled to open up another chapter, inviting you into the heart of my most recent pregnancy journey. Grab a warm cup of tea, settle in, and let’s embark on this new narrative together, exploring the highs, lows, and utterly unforgettable moments that define bringing another life into the world. This journey, like all before it, was a blend of profound joy, unexpected challenges, and a constant reaffirmation of the strength inherent in every mother.

Navigating the Early Weeks: A Whirlwind of Morning Sickness and Toddler Chaos

When I discovered I was pregnant again, a wave of familiar emotions washed over me – excitement, a touch of apprehension, and an immediate awareness of the unique challenges this new phase would bring. Unlike my earlier pregnancies, this time I had two lively toddlers, a dynamic duo full of energy and curiosity, already commanding my attention. The initial weeks of this pregnancy felt like a constant battle against the relentless tide of morning sickness, amplified by the non-stop demands of my little ones.

Some days, the nausea was so debilitating that simply getting out of bed felt like an Olympic feat. I would often retreat to my room, seeking refuge from the world, while my toddlers, sensing their newfound freedom, would embark on elaborate missions of “massive destruction” in their own space. I’d lie there, wrapped in a blanket, listening to their gleeful shouts and celebratory giggles as toys flew, books tumbled, and every surface became a canvas for their imaginative (and messy) play. It was a cacophony of jubilation for them, a soundtrack to my quiet struggle. The sheer exhaustion made it impossible to intervene immediately, so I’d resign myself to the inevitable clean-up that would follow, mentally preparing for the next round of chaos. This delicate balance between tending to my body’s needs and supervising two energetic children was a constant, exhausting tightrope walk.

The morning sickness, which felt like an unwelcome houseguest, finally began to ease after my midwife prescribed a medication designed to curb the persistent vomiting. While it offered a much-needed reprieve from the constant queasiness, it came with its own set of challenging side effects. The relief from nausea was often overshadowed by a severe, throbbing headache that would take root behind my eyes, coupled with an unsettling dizziness that made simple tasks feel precarious. It was a frustrating trade-off: solving one problem only to introduce two others, a constant reminder that remedies often come with their own complexities. This experience underscored the delicate balance of managing pregnancy symptoms, where relief from one discomfort can often usher in another, prompting continuous adjustments and a search for true well-being.

Unusual Cravings and Emotional Rollercoasters

As the early weeks gave way to the second trimester, the morning sickness gradually faded, but a new, equally potent force emerged: the infamous pregnancy cravings. These weren’t just mild preferences; they were intense, almost obsessive desires that held my taste buds hostage. My senses would conjure up the most specific images and flavors, making anything less than perfection utterly unsatisfying. One particularly strong craving was for the exact cornchaff – a delicious porridge made from corn and beans – that my aunt had served us during a memorable visit to Cameroon, just before we relocated. I didn’t want *similar* cornchaff; I wanted *that specific one*. The memory of its unique flavor profile, its texture, lingered powerfully, and nothing else seemed to compare. The thought alone would consume me, a testament to the powerful hold these cravings can have.

Another rather peculiar obsession was for Nigerian Jollof Rice, but not just any Jollof. I yearned for the kind that had gotten slightly burnt at the bottom of the pot during preparation – that caramelized, smoky, intensely flavorful layer. The desire was so strong that I almost contemplated striking up a conversation with a random Nigerian lady, purely on the hope that she might possess the culinary magic to produce this specific, perfectly “burnt” Jollof for me. It sounds absurd in retrospect, but in the grip of such a craving, reason often takes a backseat to an almost primal need.

The emotional landscape of pregnancy is notoriously unpredictable, and my patience was often as thin as a delicate wafer. One evening, a seemingly minor incident triggered an outsized reaction. My loving husband, Mr. N, had graciously gone out to buy me a much-desired hamburger. However, instead of coming straight home, he made an additional stop for some last-minute shopping. By the time he arrived, the hamburger, once a symbol of comfort and satisfaction, was disappointingly cold. The warmth had vanished, and with it, my composure. I remember the surge of irrational anger, almost to the point of tears, over what would normally be a trivial matter. It was a stark reminder of how pregnancy can heighten emotions, turning small inconveniences into significant grievances, underscoring the profound vulnerability and sensitivity of expecting mothers.

The relentless demands of pregnancy, coupled with managing a household and two active toddlers, eventually pushed me to a point where something had to give. Reluctantly, I decided to put my beloved blog on hold for a period. It was a difficult decision, as this space is a creative outlet and a source of connection for me, but the reality was that I simply couldn’t juggle everything. The energy required for crafting posts, engaging with readers, and maintaining a consistent online presence was simply not available. My physical and emotional reserves were fully dedicated to nurturing the life growing within me and caring for my existing family. While it was a temporary hiatus, the feeling of stepping back from something I cherished was a palpable sacrifice, yet a necessary one for my well-being and that of my family. This entire pregnancy journey, from its early, challenging weeks to these later, more intense phases, proved to be an intricate tapestry of intriguing moments, profound joys, and, at times, downright frustrating challenges that tested my limits in unexpected ways.

The Long Wait: Beyond the Due Date

As the months steadily progressed, the anticipation of meeting our newest family member grew with each passing day. My previous experiences had taught me to expect my babies to arrive a little ahead of schedule; both my first two daughters had made their grand entrance before their official due dates. This pattern led me to believe that this pregnancy would surely follow suit, and I meticulously prepared for an early arrival. The nursery was lovingly decorated, the tiny clothes were washed and folded, and my hospital bags were packed and re-packed with an almost obsessive attention to detail, ready for the moment labor would begin. My official due date was January 1st, a festive start to the new year, but I was convinced I would be holding my baby by December 31st, ringing in the new year with a fresh bundle of joy.

Oh, how wrong I was! December 31st came and went, completely devoid of any labor-induced drama. Then, January 1st dawned, a beautiful new year, but still, no sign of our baby. The due date, once a beacon of expectation, simply passed by, leaving me in a state of growing frustration and disappointment. I became, quite frankly, a very angry person. The constant phone calls and messages from well-meaning friends and family, all asking if “the baby had arrived yet,” only served to amplify my irritation. Each inquiry felt like a jab, a reminder of the endless waiting and the unfulfilled expectation. The physical discomfort of late pregnancy – the restless nights, the aching back, the sheer weight of carrying a full-term baby – compounded the emotional toll, making the wait feel interminable and utterly exasperating.

Me and my humongous tummy by the baby’s crib all set up

To add to the growing sense of frustration, I experienced two instances of what turned out to be false labor. The first time, I was convinced my water had broken, just as it had during my first labor experience. Hope surged through me, thinking this was finally it. We rushed to the hospital, filled with nervous excitement. After spending a grueling three hours undergoing various tests and examinations, the medical staff informed me it was a false alarm. The disappointment was profound; I was sent home, weary and disheartened, my hopes dashed. The physical discomfort, coupled with the emotional letdown, was exhausting. *sigh*

A few days later, another episode led us back to the hospital, though I can’t even recall the specific symptoms that convinced me it was real labor that time. Again, the journey ended in another diagnosis of false labor. Each trip felt like a cruel trick, an emotional rollercoaster ending in the same sad return home, my humongous-looking tummy still very much intact, and my baby still firmly nestled within. The repeated disappointment began to chip away at my morale, making the waiting even more arduous. However, as all good things come to those who wait, our precious baby finally made her grand entrance three days after her official due date. While the details of her arrival are a story for another day, I can tell you that having a baby in America presented a notably different experience compared to my previous births “at home.” I promise to share all the fascinating nuances and surprising differences of that experience in my very next pregnancy diary installment.

Until then, dear friends, stay sweet and cherish every moment of your own unique journeys!
