First Pregnancy Diaries: The Home Stretch

Just one day before my bundle of joy arrived, I was still embracing the lighter side of pregnancy. Fun? Absolutely! Though, perhaps some credit, or blame, goes to my brother and his wonderfully wild ideas that kept spirits high during the final countdown.

Navigating the Final Stretch: My Third Trimester Pregnancy Journey

Welcome back to my pregnancy diary! If you’re just joining this incredible journey, I highly recommend catching up on the earlier chapters to get the full story. You can find them here: MY FIRST PREGNANCY 1 and MY FIRST PREGNANCY 2. These posts detail the initial excitement and evolving experiences of my first two trimesters, setting the stage for the grand finale.

As I stepped into the third trimester, the world of pregnancy shifted gears dramatically. The relative calm and comfort of the second trimester quickly faded, making way for a series of new, often challenging, experiences. This final stretch, typically from week 28 until birth, is a period of immense anticipation and rapid changes, both for the expectant mother and the growing baby. It’s a time when every mother-to-be grapples with increased physical demands, emotional preparations, and the undeniable reality that the big day is drawing near. This phase is characterized by a mix of profound joy and persistent discomforts, all part of the miraculous journey towards motherhood.

The Persistent Battle for Sleep: A Third Trimester Reality

Sleep, once a cherished nightly ritual, transformed into an elusive dream during my third trimester. I often found myself waking up, not for the tenth, but what felt like the twentieth time, compelled by an insistent call of nature. The constant interruption was, to put it mildly, nettlesome. Each time, I’d reluctantly pull my heavily pregnant body from the comfort of our locally crafted oak bed, embarking on the slow, deliberate journey to the bathroom. This nightly pilgrimage was accompanied by a mental tally of how many hours of uninterrupted sleep I was losing, contributing to a growing sense of fatigue.

Yet, the cycle was relentless. Before long, often within what felt like mere minutes, the urge would return, fueling a fresh wave of frustration. How could my bladder possibly refill so quickly? If it were a person, we’d certainly be having a very stern conversation! Attempts to ignore the sensation, to simply will myself back to sleep, proved futile. The need was undeniable, drawing me begrudgingly out of bed and back to the bathroom, again and again. This reality quickly taught me that for many expectant mothers, sleepless nights don’t commence with the arrival of a newborn; they begin long before, deep within the third trimester. The myriad discomforts of this phase make a restorative, uninterrupted night’s sleep feel like an impossible fantasy.

Finding Comfort: The Elusive Sleeping Position

Beyond the bladder’s insistent demands, finding a comfortable sleeping position became an Olympic sport. My ever-expanding belly meant that once-favorite positions were now entirely off-limits. I’d turn to my right side, only to immediately feel the inexplicable urge to shift to the left. Then, upon settling on my left, a new sensation would prompt me to return to the right. Even when I finally managed to find a seemingly ‘perfect’ spot on my right, a whisper in my mind would suggest that perhaps lying on my back would finally do the trick. But alas, lying flat on my back often brought its own set of discomforts, and lying on my stomach, my old favourite, was by now an utterly impossible feat. My nights became a restless ballet of constant, poky shifts, a seemingly endless cycle of tossing and turning, each movement an attempt to alleviate an unseen pressure or an emerging ache.

This struggle is a common narrative for pregnant women. The growing uterus puts pressure on major blood vessels when lying on the back, making side-sleeping the recommended posture. Pillows became my new best friends – wedged between my knees, under my belly, behind my back – creating a fortress of comfort that still, more often than not, failed to deliver true repose. The physical strain, combined with the mental exhaustion of interrupted sleep, began to take a significant toll on my energy levels and overall well-being. It’s a testament to the perseverance of expectant mothers that they endure such profound sleep deprivation even before their babies arrive.

The Grand Transformation: Navigating Third Trimester Body Changes

After enjoying the relatively smooth sailing of the second trimester, the third trimester ushered in a period of profound physical transformation. I often felt like an inflated version of my former self. Every part of my body seemed to have undergone an expansion project. My beloved shorts, once a wardrobe staple, could no longer be pulled past my thighs, a clear sign that my body was preparing for a new phase. Even more noticeably, my fingers grew significantly bigger, trapping my wedding ring in a tight embrace. Despite multiple valiant attempts to coax it off, it remained stubbornly stuck, a symbol of my body’s amazing, yet sometimes overwhelming, metamorphosis. This visible change, while sometimes a source of mild frustration, was also a powerful reminder of the incredible work my body was doing.

Swollen Feet and Other Common Ailments

My feet, in particular, underwent a dramatic transformation. At times, they felt as massive and unwieldy as an elephant’s (a slight hyperbole, perhaps, but certainly how they felt!). The hospital confirmed that this swelling was due to fluid retention, a common medical condition known as oedema. Thankfully, despite its alarming appearance, it wasn’t painful, though the sheer size made walking and standing for extended periods quite challenging. Oedema during pregnancy is often caused by the increased blood volume and the pressure of the growing uterus on the veins, leading to fluid accumulation in the lower extremities. While generally benign, it’s always important to monitor any sudden or severe swelling and discuss it with a healthcare provider, especially if it’s accompanied by headaches or vision changes.

Beyond the swelling, other familiar third-trimester discomforts made their presence known. Back pain, a constant companion, intensified as my center of gravity shifted and my ligaments softened. Braxton Hicks contractions, those ‘practice’ contractions, became more frequent, preparing my uterus for the real event, though sometimes causing moments of anxiety about mistaking them for true labor. Heartburn, shortness of breath as my lungs competed for space with my growing baby, and general fatigue became daily realities. Each ache and discomfort, however, served as a poignant reminder of the incredible life developing within me, and the monumental journey my body was undertaking. It was a challenging but ultimately beautiful experience of adapting to new physical realities.

Seeking Solace: Traditional Wisdom and Modern Medical Insight

As my pregnancy progressed, my enlarged frame continued to draw comments from onlookers. However, the tone had subtly shifted from curious observation to genuine sympathy. Almost everyone I encountered offered unsolicited advice, with one recommendation surfacing repeatedly: to drink copious amounts of lemongrass tea, locally known as ‘fever grass’. In many cultures, traditional remedies hold a significant place in managing pregnancy discomforts, and this was no exception.

In my desperation for any form of relief, I became an enthusiastic, if not slightly obsessive, consumer of this herbal remedy. My generous neighbor’s garden, boasting an abundant supply of fever grass, became my frequent harvesting ground. I’d collect the freshest stalks, boil them diligently, and gulp down the resulting tea, often unsweetened, hoping for a miracle for my swollen feet. When the fresh supply dwindled, I moved on to the dried leaves, grateful for her continued generosity. My flask became a permanent fixture, always filled with warm lemongrass tea. Despite my relentless efforts and the sheer volume I consumed, I must admit, it didn’t seem to make a noticeable difference to my discomforts. Yet, my ‘drinkittude’ proved surprisingly contagious; soon, almost everyone around me, perhaps out of solidarity or curiosity, began consuming the homemade tea, hoping to catch some of its purported benefits.

The Importance of the Late-Pregnancy Ultrasound

Amidst the home remedies and well-intentioned advice, professional medical guidance remained paramount. My midwife, a beacon of wisdom and practical advice, strongly recommended a late-pregnancy ultrasound. Her explanation, delivered in the reassuring cadence of Cameroonian Pidgin English, emphasized its importance:

“Belle dem, as time for born di cam reach e fine for go make dem look pikin for computer. E go helep we for know if pikin di grow fine. Them go check dat water wey e shiddon inside if e correct. Den dey go check if pikin shiddon fine. Abeg, for here we no di talk wether pikin na boy or girl because some Mami dem di vex when they say na boy when they want girl or they say girl, when they want boy. Pikin na pikin!”

Translated, her words meant: “Pregnant ladies, as the time for birth approaches, it’s good to go have them check the baby on the computer. It will help us know if the baby is growing well. They will check the fluid it’s sitting in to see if it’s correct. Then they will check if the baby is positioned well. Please, here we don’t discuss whether the baby is a boy or a girl, because some mothers get upset when told it’s a boy and they wanted a girl, or vice versa. A baby is a baby!” This cultural nuance of not revealing gender, focusing instead on the baby’s health, resonated deeply.

Heeding her advice, I underwent the ultrasound, which cost 10,000 CFA francs (approximately 15-20 USD). The process was quick, and the technician was reassuring. They confirmed that I was healthy and, most importantly, that our baby was doing just fine. As a customary gesture, they provided a printed image, “claiming” it was a picture of my little one. To my untrained eye, it was a bewildering array of black and white shadows overlapping each other – certainly not the clear, adorable baby picture I might have imagined! Nevertheless, the overwhelming relief and gratitude that my baby was healthy overshadowed any confusion about the abstract image. It was a tangible, if abstract, first glimpse of the life I was about to welcome.

Anticipation Builds: The Eve of Delivery

As the days turned into weeks, and the due date drew closer, a potent mix of excitement, anxiety, and profound love filled my every moment. The challenges of the third trimester – the sleepless nights, the swollen limbs, the constant discomfort – all became part of the journey, temporary hurdles on the path to meeting my child. Each Braxton Hicks contraction, each restless shift in bed, each sympathetic glance from a stranger, brought me closer to the moment of truth. My body, though weary, was a testament to strength and resilience, preparing for the ultimate marathon.

This final chapter of pregnancy was an intense period of waiting, wondering, and preparing. It was a time of immense growth, not just for the baby, but for me as an expectant mother. The bond with my unborn child deepened with every flutter and kick. The preparations for the nursery, the endless lists, the last-minute errands – all served to channel the burgeoning anticipation and keep my mind focused on the impending joy. I found myself reading countless articles and books on childbirth, trying to mentally prepare for what lay ahead, knowing full well that no amount of reading could truly capture the lived experience.

And then, suddenly, it was the day before delivery. The playful photo, captured with my brother’s enthusiastic encouragement, perfectly encapsulates the bittersweet blend of humor and readiness that characterized those final hours. It was a moment of calm before the storm, a last playful embrace of pregnancy before stepping into the monumental role of motherhood. The journey had been long, filled with unexpected turns and invaluable lessons. But nothing could truly prepare me for what lay ahead. In the next installment of this series, I will bravely recount the unforgettable story of my very first delivery – a narrative of pain, power, and the indescribable joy of meeting my baby for the very first time. Stay tuned!
