Adventures at Como Zoo

Among the countless blessings that grace my life, few compare to the profound joy of waking each morning to the presence of my three phenomenal daughters. Their infectious smiles and boundless curiosity illuminate our home, transforming ordinary days into extraordinary adventures. It is a privilege to guide them, instilling in their young hearts the timeless value of faith, teaching them to prioritize God above all else. Hearing their sweet voices declare, “I love you,” an uncountable number of times throughout the day, fills my spirit with unparalleled warmth. Together, we are weaving a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences and cherished memories that will endure a lifetime, much like the unforgettable journey we embarked upon last weekend with a visit to the Como Zoo.

Last Friday, Mr. N surprised us with what we affectionately dubbed a “homeschooling field trip” to the local zoo. The simple phrase “field trip” possesses a magical quality, instantly tripling the girls’ excitement and anticipation. Yet, if I’m being entirely honest, my own enthusiasm probably surpassed theirs. This wasn’t our first encounter with the Como Zoo; it holds a special place in our hearts as the very same destination we explored on our wedding anniversary. The girls had been eagerly anticipating this return visit, literally “dying to go” to the Como Zoo again. This time, however, our animal viewing experience was somewhat curtailed. As the crisp autumn air gives way to colder temperatures, many of the zoo’s residents are transitioned indoors to warmer, more controlled environments for their comfort and safety. While we didn’t get to see as many animals out in their outdoor habitats, the unexpected shift led us to discover other fascinating aspects of the zoo complex.

Indeed, with many outdoor exhibits closed for the season, our attention naturally gravitated towards the magnificent conservatory attached to the zoo. What a delightful revelation it proved to be! Stepping inside was like being instantly transported to a lush, tropical paradise, a vibrant escape from the encroaching chill of late autumn. The air was thick with humidity, fragrant with the scent of rich earth and exotic blooms, a stark contrast to the brisk Minnesota air outside. We encountered an astonishing array of plant life, an Eden of botanical wonders. It was particularly thrilling for me to discover numerous plants typically found thriving in Africa, a beautiful reminder of diverse ecosystems across the globe. Among these, I recognized familiar species like the majestic mango, the vibrant papaya, sweet oranges, and the graceful banana plants, all flourishing under the conservatory’s protective canopy. It was a miniature world tour for our senses, right here in our own city.

The conservatory also offered a profound learning experience for me, extending beyond just recognizing familiar plants. I was utterly captivated by a section dedicated to an incredible marvel of nature: carnivorous plants! Until that day, I hadn’t truly grasped the existence of such botanical predators. Learning about their intricate mechanisms for survival – how they ingeniously trap and digest insects for sustenance – was absolutely astounding. It was a vivid demonstration of nature’s relentless adaptability and ingenuity, showcasing how life finds a way to thrive even in nutrient-poor environments by developing such specialized and fascinating hunting strategies. These plants, with their unique beauty and deadly purpose, were a highlight of our visit, sparking a deep curiosity about the hidden wonders of the plant kingdom.

Our journey through the conservatory continued to unveil more surprises, leading us to an exhibit featuring the most incredibly vibrant and colorful frogs. Their hues were so intensely bright and seemingly artificial that they looked utterly surreal, like characters sprung from a fantastical painting. Yet, they were undeniably real, alive, and brimming with an otherworldly charm. But as we learned, their dazzling appearance serves a critical purpose: it’s a potent warning. These beautiful creatures, despite their captivating allure, are often highly poisonous. It’s a powerful lesson in nature’s deceptive beauty, reminding us not to be fooled by outward appearances and to respect the inherent dangers that can lie beneath a dazzling exterior. The vivid contrast between their delicate beauty and their potent toxicity was truly mesmerizing and a stark reminder of the intricate balance of life and defense in the natural world.

Further into the botanical wonderland, we discovered an awe-inspiring house entirely dedicated to palms. The sheer variety and majestic stature of these trees created an almost cathedral-like atmosphere, with sunlight filtering through their expansive fronds, casting intricate patterns on the ground. I simply couldn’t resist pausing for a photograph amidst this verdant splendor. As I stood there, surrounded by the towering palms, my mind immediately drifted to the comforting words of the Bible, which says that the righteous flourish like a palm tree. This spiritual resonance added another layer of depth to the experience, transforming a simple observation of nature into a moment of quiet reflection and inspiration. The image of flourishing, resilient life resonated deeply with my personal beliefs and aspirations, making the palm house a truly special and memorable stop on our field trip.

Our botanical exploration continued to surprise and delight us with the discovery of bonsai trees. These meticulously cultivated trees are miniature versions of their full-sized counterparts, skillfully trained and shaped by human hands to create living works of art. It was astonishing to learn that some of these incredible living sculptures can endure for hundreds of years, a testament to the dedication, patience, and artistry involved in their creation and maintenance. The intricate details of their tiny branches, the perfectly formed leaves, and the ancient, gnarled trunks spoke volumes about the passage of time and the beauty that can be found in small, carefully nurtured things. The bonsai exhibit offered a profound lesson in patience, perseverance, and the timeless connection between humans and nature through art and cultivation.

As the winter months approach, bringing with them colder temperatures and fewer opportunities for outdoor exploration, I anticipate frequent returns to this wonderful greenhouse. It offers a much-needed sanctuary, a vibrant oasis where I can reconnect with nature’s beauty and vitality, even when the harsh weather attempts to keep us confined indoors. The warmth, the lush greenery, and the sheer diversity of plant life provide a welcome antidote to the dreary days of winter, allowing me to maintain a vital connection to the natural world and recharge my spirit throughout the colder season. It will undoubtedly become a regular escape for both learning and rejuvenation.

Beyond our enchanting family outing, this past week also brought forth a flurry of other significant moments and reflections:

The American Election Results: A Call for Perspective

The outcomes of the recent American presidential elections have undeniably become one of the most talked-about and, for many, shocking events in recent human history. I’ve observed countless individuals agonizing, debating, and even fiercely fighting over the results across various social media platforms. I admit, I too felt the pull of that intense fervor, almost getting swept up in the online frenzy. However, a crucial question arose in my mind: is this really worth it? The quarrels, the arguments, and the divisions fostered over who occupies the White House often serve to distort the fundamental spirit of love, unity, and respect that should bind friends and family together. While civic engagement is important, it’s vital to acknowledge that there are far more pressing and enduring concerns that warrant our attention and energy. How we choose to live our daily lives here on earth, the kindness and compassion we extend to others, and how we prepare for the eternity that awaits us—knowing our time on this earth is ultimately fleeting—these are the matters of true, lasting significance. Maintaining healthy relationships and focusing on our core values should always take precedence over political disagreements, no matter how heated they become.

I Heart You: A Message of Gratitude

To each of you who consistently takes the time out of your busy schedules to read the thoughts and experiences I share here, and especially to those who go the extra mile to leave a comment or share your own insights: thank you from the bottom of my heart. Remember that life, with all its unpredictable twists and turns, often presents challenges, but no matter how difficult or disheartening circumstances may seem, there is always hope. Things can and often do get better. Hold onto that optimism, nurture your resilience, and strive to find the beauty and purpose in every moment. That’s what’s been happening in my world, my dear friends. How about yours?
